Punters buying used PCs to avoid Vista

XP is proving to be a golden oldie.
Punters are apparently scrambling to get their hands on used, second hand PCs, not just because they offer a cheap fix in tough economic times, but mainly because they come loaded with Windows XP rather than Vista.

Studies carried out by both Gartner and IDC have found that because older software is often incompatible with Vista, many consumers are opting for used computers with XP installed as a default, rather than buying an expensive new PC with Vista and downgrading.

Big business, which typically thinks nothing about splashing out for newer, more up-to-date PCs, is also having trouble with Vista, with even firms like Intel noting XP would remain the dominant OS within the company for the foreseeable future.

Josh Kaplan, president of computer repair outfit Rescuecom, told PC World people wanted to stick with XP to avoid standardisation problems. His company has resold XP-based PCs to companies that use software that is incompatible with Vista and which would require a substantial upgrade to become compatible. "Having five PCs that are Vista and five XP can create training and compatibility issues," he said.

Of course, buying a second-hand PC without having to shell out for a Vista license is also much cheaper and certain cheeky resellers are attempting to bump up their own profits even further by selling computers with illegitimate copies of XP bunged in, something which Gartner severly frowns upon, by the way.

Naughty, naughty, chipping away at Microsoft’s billions like that. You should all be ashamed of yourselves.

This was the decision I had to make recently when buying a new desktop as I definately did not want Vista.
The simple solution is to buy from Dell who still give you the choice between Vista and XP.

I have four computers (three PCs and a laptop). I, too, refuse to go into the endless hassles of moving to Vista when XP Pro does everything I need from it. I cannot contemplate the cost of buying new licenses for Vista and then find I am facing further costs because of older software that may or may not work with Vista.
In fact, I expect the same problems will emerge all over again with Windows 7.
I am very much under the impression that Windows 7 is once again going to be not much more than a minor upgrade and tyhat it will, in effect, NOT do much, if anything, that XP Pro doesn't do already.
I am sick and tired of Windows trying to screw as much money out of people's pockets as it can. Maybe (maybe!) I might have given Vista a go if I could simply buy the software and call it my own. No, if I want to change horses it will cost me big for four licences, and then I have to do so not knowing for sure that it won't force me into having to acquire new(er) versions of other software on my computers as well. No thanks. In my case, I suspect I will stick with XP Pro for a long time to come.

I'd have no issue with buying a PC with vista loaded, I have been using vista since it came out and love it. There was only one bit of software I had that did'nt work till I turned on the compatability mode for it then it worked right away. and doesnt everyone remember the issues with XP when that first came out!
Vista has more security, crashes far less, and looks MUCH NICER! and for people new to computing is much easyer to learn!

I only ever build my own pcs either with parts from ebay or from local computer shops, and thus i don't have to worry about receiving bundled/prepackaged/preinstalled software. i use linux as it works for ME. also means that i usually get more bang for my buck too.

I can't even begin to say how sick I am of this overblown XP is fabulous / Vista sucks line of thought which seems to have taken over the world...

Sure, Vista had some teething problems. What OS doesn't. Maybe Vista had slightly more than its fair share. And sure, XP is a mature OS that is stable and does what it's supposed to do.

But I and many, many others have had Vista from the start with hardly any issues to speak of. It's not as if there aren't many benefits to upgrading to Vista. It looks great, it has new features and has better security than XP. I for one will be going for a 64 bit version of Windows 7 as soon as it's released. There's no point staying in the past. Imagine if half the world was still using Windows 3.11 for Workgroups ;)

Vista is OK by me. I think the whole thing is a marketing conspiracy perpetuated by Apple Macintosh.

I would tend to agree with you, djaef.
I think it is a media beat up.
Who in their right mind would buy a second hand computer to replace their second hand computer unless money was an issue.
Most would just keep on patching up their existing computer with the existing operating system.

Seems like a nonsense issue to me, when one really looks at it.

Cheers

Vista is a dog. It always has been and it always will be. It's a bloated mess of code that functions much like dying cancer patient on life-support ... is XP any better? Not really. It's just as messy and has just as many faults, BUT! XP is already there, so why would anyone PAY good money for something that is no better (and perhaps even worse) than what they already have...? Eating fecal matter for breakfast sounds altogether a more enjoyable prospect ...

I bought my laptop a year ago - with Vista - and the start up time seems to double every time I get an update! which is driving me potty (not hard at my age) Now there is talk of a new version of Windows makes me think that as we all buy our precious machines there always seems to be a new OS to go with them only to be outdated almost as you walk out of the shop! Dare I say it smacks of a humungous money making exercise and now we are having browsers thrown at us when will it all end? I was thinking of going back to a desktop but all this furour is putting me off!:-({|=
