Ubuntu Linux updates released

by Shaun Nichols  on Nov 4, 2008
"OK, I have a story of woe concerning Kubuntu 8.10. Isn't there always someone spoiling the party. I had been running Kubuntu 8.04 on an old AMD Athlon puter with a reasonable video card ..."

The latest edition of the Ubuntu Linux operating system has been released.
Canonical, which distributes the open-source operating system, said the new versions of both the desktop and server clients would add major features.

For desktop users, the 8.10 update will feature support for 3G hardware connections as well as the ability to write and start up a system from an external USB drive. The update also adds support for guest sessions as well as free BBC content available in bundled multimedia applications.

Ubuntu's Gnome graphical interface has also been updated for the latest release.

"Ubuntu 8.10 sees us lay the groundwork for a radically different, more mobile desktop computing environment over the next two years," said Canonical chief operating officer Jane Silber, who promised that updates and improvements to the operating system would exceed those of rival operating systems.

The updated server edition of Ubuntu will sport enhanced virtualisation tools and Java components, as well as improved Raid storage support.

Stronger security is a central component of the update as well. Canonical touted Ubuntu Server's improved mail and encryption features along with better compiling and reporting tools and an updated firewall system.

"Ubuntu 8.10 Server Edition is a terrific milestone that underlines the value in our twin track release strategy," Silber said of the release.

"The server edition embraces cloud computing, virtualisation, mail server enhancements, Java development and deployment as well as a range of services to help system administrators and developers.

Everyone should go and try Intrepid, works well, though when I installed it I somehow got rid of XP, oh well who needs it anyway!

Don't write in all caps, it's considered rude. Cheers.

OK, I have a story of woe concerning Kubuntu 8.10. Isn't there always someone spoiling the party.

I had been running Kubuntu 8.04 on an old AMD Athlon puter with a reasonable video card and it was all running like clockwork.
Well, not just being content with that, I thought, Hmm, why not do the upgrade to 8.10, via the package manager. (that day I lived to rue):x

The good bit is that it all downloaded really well, as I have come to expect with Kubuntu, and installed itself. I thought, looking good here, with anticipation rising.
I am just a reboot away from the latest Kubuntu bliss.

WRONG!!!

On the reboot it gets to the login and freezes the mouse and keyboard. The cursor is still blinking away in the password box like a cat inside a window with the dog outside, you get the picture.

And that was the start of the missadventure of trying to fix it.

The last thing I heard was that it was a duel between the video card and the mobo, that was just before I reached for the Suse 11.0 Iso and drifted off into Suse bliss, Ahhh, thats good.

Frankly I am disappointed with Kubuntu, the cracks are starting to show. They will probably sheet it back to KDE 4, but if it don't work, call it a Beta and be done with it.

Cheers
