Telstra's BigPond wireless, the good and the bad

by William Maher  on Oct 20, 2008
More data and removal of excess usage fees are good news if you rely on Telstra's country-wide Next G coverage. And look at this, a 12 month contract.
If you've read our new Mobile Broadband Buyer's Guide (PC Authority October 2008 issue) you'll know that we've given our official seal of approval to 3 - the speeds, value and data allowances continue to set the pace. See our reviews of 3, BigPond and Optus.

One area where 3 lags behind is network coverage, and where Telstra's Next G has the upper hand - so this week's tweak to BigPopnd plans should come as welcome relief if you rely on Telstra's coverage.

The big news is removal of excess data fees for Telstra's top-end "BigPond Liberty" BigPond wireless plans. For the 5GB ($89.96 per month) and 10Gb per month plans ($129.95 per month) you're now no longer hit with a 25 cents per megabyte fee if you go over your limit.

The excess fees still apply to the smaller quotas, but at Telstra is restricting these to 12-month contracts, rather the common 24-month plans sold by the competition. You get 200MB for $29.95 (not great, considering the 2GB for $29 on offer from 3), and 1GB for $59.95 per month (again, vastly different to the limited-coverage 3 network, which offers 7GB for $49 on 24-month contract). Over at Optus, $49.99 gets you 5GB on a non-bundled plan.

The new Telstra BigPond wireless prices are here.
