We weigh the first Google Android phone up against its smartphone competitors
The T-Mobile G1 is set to give plenty of high–end phones a hard time in the next few months thanks to its Google Android OS. We’ve whipped out the cream of the smartphone crop to see how it squares up and where it falls down.
T–Mobile G1 vs iPhone 3G
The G1’s touchscreen is undoubtedly the best stab anyone’s had at taking on Apple’s excellent multitouch wonder. It’s incredibly intuitive, doesn’t feature pesky haptics and doesn’t take you into the wrong menus. However, it falls down against the Apple blower thanks to the lack of a 3.5mm jack and a measly 2GB of storage.

T–Mobile G1 vs BlackBerry Bold
The QWERTY keyboard on the G1 is actually a pleasure to use, despite looks to the contrary. It’s far easier to use than the more cramped stylings of the BlackBerry Bold. It loses points for a lack of push email though, but you can expect Micrsoft Exchange to come steamrolling in soon enough.

T–Mobile G1 vs Nokia N96
The big news with the G1 is undoubtedly Android. It makes the N96’s Symbian S60 look complex by comparison. The N96 wins out thanks to its excellent 5MP camera, up to 24GB of storage and general all–round cleverness. Android really does have the power to scare Nokia though.

T–Mobile G1 vs Samsung Omnia
The Omnia isn't available in Australia, but overseas has been billed as an all round business phone, but the open source Android styling will give WinMo plenty of nightmares. It’s far easier to use and doing business on the G1 is a breeze thanks to that QWERTY keyboard. Suits won’t buy the G1 right away, but Android has the power to convert them in the future.
T–Mobile G1 vs HTC Touch Diamond
HTC is behind both of these phones, but the difference here is palpable. The G1 has a better touchscreen, a similar snapper and a niftier OS. So that really leaves the question, will HTC put Android on the Touch Diamond? Because then we really would have an iPhone–beater on our hands.
