Meet the new Dell Mini 9 netbook

As predicted, Dell has finally stopped months of itty bitty leaks and come clean with their very own Eee PC destroyer, the Mini 9 netbook.
Despite going through a series of name changes, the micro lappie once known as the Mini Inspiron 910 is yours to own from today, reportedly starting at a not too shabby $599, including delivery.

For now, us Australian netbook lovers are only getting dibs on the XP version, but at that price we're certainly not going to balk. Under the hood you'll find a hearty 1GB of RAM, up to 16GB SSD, an Intel Atom and the usual 8.9in screen that seemingly every laptop needs these days to make itself hip for the cool kids heading back to school or college.

Input-wise, you'll get USB, a 3-in 1 card reader, VGA and Ethernet. On top of that you get Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and a 1.3MP camera for web nattering. At the moment, Dell is being coy about how much the specced up versions will cost here, but they have just announced overseas that a Linux model will land "in a few weeks." We'll keep you posted.

Took us long enough to get this info..... I too only had the press release sent to me this morning... after months of the aus PR team knowing nothing about it!

Looks interesting, though not amazingly exciting in the current climate of micro-laptops.

I think the only thing that will separate it from others is the build quality - which is yet to be seen.

Features etc, all seem pretty consistent across the entire range from all companies.

Though the use of a 1024x600 screen doesn't really excite me much either, compared to the 1280x768 screen of the HP mininote.

Screen, keyboard are the big factors - that and whether you're forced to go with Vista.

Yeah, i absolutely hated the keyboard on the Eee... Sold it to get myself an HP Mininote. MUCH more usable machine... keyboard is great, screen is fantastic... the big issues are lack of battery life, and the touchpad.. But it does run Vista Business adequately.

It's interesting...
I've just checked the official webside -- http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/laptop-inspiron-9?c=au&l=en&s=dhs&cs=audhs1

The keyboards have improved on the Eee -- I found the initial models a little too loose, but they don't seem to have that same feel on more recent models.

I'm a fan of the MSI Wind, but the Mini-note is pretty stylish.

How's the size of the keyboard, on the Eee 900/901, and the Wind??

That was by far the biggest issue for me... mashing multiple keys more often than i should.

From my understanding the Wind has the same-ish size keyboard as the 1000 series EEE's, which is 90 something percent of the size of a regular notebook keyboard.
