XP Pirates, Microsoft is watching you

Have you ever sat back and thought to yourself "Self -- why doesn't Microsoft accuse me of being a thief more often?". You may think this is a thought pattern that's never crossed your mind, but according to Microsoft, you're wrong.
A posting on the Windows Genuine Advantage Blog (see -- even anti-piracy software can have its own blog these days) announcing that the anti-piracy features present in Windows Vista will, from today, be brought to the Windows XP Pro platform, contains the following interesting claim:

"Our research has clearly shown that customers value the ability of Windows to alert them when they may have software that is not genuine, but they also want the ability to stay up to date with the least effort required on their part."

So, apparently pirates want validation that what they're doing is dodgy -- it makes them feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

In any case, the blog states that Windows XP Pro will get the new feature, but not XP Home, as XP Pro is apparently the most pirated version of Windows. Strangely enough, when Microsoft was launching Windows XP, they claimed that is was the most secure, least able to be pirated version ever. Funny what seven years can do.

Once the new version of WGA is installed, users on non-validated systems will see their system backdrop go black, and a permanent watermark embedded above the system tray that warns that the copy they're using didn't pass validation. Users can work around the watermark, and the desktop can be changed back, but it'll revert every sixty minutes to the all-black backdrop regardless.

You can read all about the changes here.

Found the line about XP home not getting it funny :)

the biggest group of piraters are students considering that multimedia students need packages that are like $2000+ and only need those packages for about a term...but now some software distros are now pulling their finger out and offering the product for a discounted, or free, offer. particuly MS they doing a good job at recognizing that.

I think Microsoft have done an excellent work with Office for students. I was wondering what Windows Genuine Advantage was on my update list. I think I'll just download it for giggles but like it looks like another way for Microsoft to port people over to Vista.

Well, this is an interesting twist. It'll get broken, the question is, how long?

So Big Brother Bill contines to watch over us.

He tells us that XP is stable, yet keeps delivering functionality updates.
I am a genuine user and ABSOLUTELY do not appreciate any suggestion otherwise. I also do not think it is my (or anyone else's place) to tell anyone how to thinkor act.
No doubt this scheme of his will be broken, My only question is will it be broken before or after the new WGA software is forced onto our systems. For those who think they must be pirates, I hope the break is soon.

Your post makes no sense.

If you have legit software, nothing will change on your system.

"I also do not think it is my (or anyone else's place) to tell anyone how to thinkor act."
It's well within a company's right to prevent their products being stolen.

"My only question is will it be broken before or after the new WGA software is forced onto our systems."
If you have automatic updates on, chances are it's already on your system.

Lol...I can't believe they're even bothering. So some people's desktops are going to turn black. How long will that last? About 2 minutes, I'd say...or at least, long enough for the pirate (with half a brain) to roll back to an earlier image and press the 'no thanks' button on the install of the new WGA.

What difference does any of it make. Seriously, ask yourself this: did you buy your current operating system because of an add on the TV? :-k I doubt it.
