Top guns grounded.
The US Air Force has formed its first fighter air wing consisting solely of remote operator-controlled drone aircraft.

The 174th Fighter Wing is currently made up of piloted F-16 strike aircraft and the unit has just returned from duty in Iraq. Now the entire wing will be transitioned into the first wing made up of MQ-9 Reaper drones, according to the military paper Strategy Page.

The drones can fly for over 14 hours before refuelling and operate at up to 50,000 feet and carry up to three tons of ordinance. They cost a third of the price of an F-16 fighter and cost 100 times less to fuel.

The pilots will be trained on the new craft and will be able to fly the aircraft remotely without leaving the United States. Maintenance crews will still need to be shipped out to wherever the wing is deployed.

Manned fighter aircraft will be needed for the foreseeable future due to the quick response times needed for aerial combat. The Reapers will be used to stay on target over areas and launch missiles or 'smart' bombs where needed.

However, there may be hidden costs to the switch. Some reports are saying that the psychological effects of using such weapons will lead to a higher mental attrition rate among pilots.

"When you come in at 500-600 miles per hour, drop a 500-pound bomb and then fly away, you don't see what happens," Colonel Albert K. Aimar, who is commander of the 163d Reconnaissance Wing and has a bachelor's degree in psychology, told The Boston Globe.

But when a drone fires a missile, "you watch it all the way to impact, and I mean it's very vivid, it's right there and personal. So it does stay in people's minds for a long time."

The Air Force has called in therapists, psychologists and even chaplains to try and help drone operators adjust.

"It's bizarre, I guess," said Lieutenant Colonel Michael Lenahan, a Predator pilot and operations director for the 196th Reconnaissance Squadron.

"It is quite different, going from potentially shooting a missile, then going to your kid's soccer game."

War is bad enough, so I hear. Sadly, I am medically unfit to serve, even after 5 efforts to enlist.
The stark contrast between killing people and then going home to the kids without cooling off, that's scary.
I wonder how this will affect the people involved in "risk-free" environment of remote war just sounds like "cold blooded murder" to me vs. the potentially real need to actually fight for my own life in a war zone. But I also wonder what it will say to future generations when Dad comes home and says he killed 'X' people today. His kids might start to think it's actually right and put crime rates through the roof.
Remote war removes the physical separation on-site operations create. Actually being in the war theatre provides a huge detachment for the soldiers' family that makes it easier to understand killing. The argument would be Dad is over there fighting for justice, he is risking his own life for our beliefs and some killing is necessary. Remote war is just a bloody video game, but with profoundly real consequences; and is likely to lead idiots like George Bush into more wars for even more spurious beliefs.
I better add a disclaimer, I was born in the USA and my family moved to Australia when I was 16. I strongly believe in the USA's founding dreams, ideals & principles, but find them badly corrupted particularly by the present Government's abuse of power. My opinion is very similar to those who respect the ideals of any religion, while understanding that it is inherently at risk due to the flaws of human nature.

I was found ethically unfit to serve;)
So hot blooded murder in the heat of the battle is better than cold blooded murder toto?
Seems a pretty fine distinction to me.
Seems to me that what they're worried about is traumatic shock syndrome taking over from post traumatic shock syndrome.
should save the US airforce a fortune in pharmaceuticals for their pilots to.

I love my flight sims. I wonder if I'd be temperamentally suited to blowing up tanks and churches and things with a drone:-k
I don't seem to suffer any pangs of conscience in Falcon 4.0:)

Only manual I've got for him to learn in is my work van and he's not allowed to drive that. It'll cost me a fortune in instructors fees to get him up to speed (pardon the pun) on a manual. Oh well.
I suspect we should give the airforce their thread back before cyb3r catches us:lol:
