First unveiled at IDF in 2007, the new system supports speeds of up to 4.8Gb/s, compared to the 480Mb/s speed of the USB 2.0 standard..
Intel has released a new set of tools which will allow hardware vendors to build chips for the upcoming version of the USB interface.

The Extensible Host Controller Interface (xHCI) draft specification allows the USB host controllers to communicate with a software stack, allowing developers to communicate with the USB 3 hardware and build controller chips for devices.

Intel described the interface as a simplified kit for integrating the 'SuperSpeed' USB connections.

"This is a 'Dummies Guide' to building silicon chips that support the new USB 3.0 standard," the company said.

"The industry is keen to adopt a single standard in order to ensure great interoperability between USB 3.0 devices."

Intel is hoping to push USB 3.0 as the connection standard for HD media devices that are demanding larger pipelines for data transfers. First unveiled at IDF in 2007, the new system supports speeds of up to 4.8Gb/s, compared to the 480Mb/s speed of the USB 2.0 standard.

The company counts Microsoft, AMD, Dell and nVidia amongst the early backers for SuperSpeed USB.

Intel hopes to release the next xHCI draft specification by the end of the year.

So far, the evolving speeds of USB have been fine for my needs, perhaps it is because I am generally more patient than many people I see. I honestly believe that most people should agree.
Sure, I would appreciate additional speed, but really only desire it in the context of a new application: I would dearly love to bele to plug a USB drive into any computer anywhere and have my OS, configuration, applications and data all just there. In that case, the quantity of information going back and forth is likely to overwhelm anything less, given the number of simultaneous windows and tabs I often stare at.
The truth is that even my 4 month old desktop seldom achieves anything like the full 480MB/s speed it can theoretically achieve. So getting a new USB3 PC and Flash devices isn't likely to really be much faster for some time.

Let's see now.
USB 1.1 was fullspeed and was rated at 12Mb/s
USB 2.0 was high speed and was rated at 480Mb/s
USB 3.0 will be what? "Fairly fast" and rated at 4.8Gb/s
Gotta love the marketing people.=d>

Just read to the end of the article. SuperSpeed then? so much for convention then=p~

holey moley a V8 lawnmower could be lethal. espe if it gets away. and imagine the cost of fuel/gas/*insert other ridiculously priced alternative here* but with a USB port maybe you can script it to automate lawnmowing. think we might be on to something here :-k
