Apple twice the price of PCs

But don’t expect a low cost line soon.
Research by analyst house NPD has shown that on average Apple users pay twice as much in the shops as PC users.

Retail data showed that in June the average cost for a Windows laptop was US$700, compared to US$1,515 for an Apple machine. The difference was even more stark with desktop models, with the average Windows machine going for US$550, compared to US$1,543.

“There are plenty of Windows PCs you can buy at high prices,” Stephen Baker, NPD’s vice president of industry analysis said.

“But if you want to buy an Apple you don’t have any choice, you’ll have to pay more.”

He continued that in his opinion it was just a choice Apple had made, and the company could argue that the value of the software and brand made up for the price differential.

The situation was comparable with the car market he explained. BMW and Chevy make basically the same product, a car, but the difference in branding, how customers were treated and perceived value lets BMW charge more.

This is not to say Apple don’t make low cost products. He praised the company for its skilful roll out of a range of iPod media players to suit all markets without lowering brand value.

But he warned it was unlikely in his opinion that Apple would be bringing out a low cost computer line any time soon.

“I’ve wrestled with that one, but I don’t see today what the driver is to make them want to do that.”

“Sales still growing stronger than anyone else’s in the market so there’s little incentive. That’s the kind of strategy you adopt when you realise growth is slowing.”

This article is a bit dodgy. It's saying that Apple is making it's money on marketing and advertising, but I think it's important to also consider that the 'cheapest' iMac is a 17-inch flat screen all-in-one thingy with a Core 2 Duo...the 'cheapest' pc you could build would be whitebox with a Pentium and bugger all else.

So it's also just a higher standard of build quality and parts... :-P

Let's not forget the basic principles of the economy - there are competitors in the PC industry vying your business, so the prices remain low.
Apple's hardware all comes from set-in-stone manufacturers that aren't budging anytime soon, eliminating the need for competitive prices.

Plus, Macs have always competed very, very well in niche and professional markets because - when push comes to shove - you're going to get more out of a peaking Mac than you will a PC.
Most evidence for this is anecdotal, but it is shown simply by the large number of professional organisations that are using Macs for graphic/web design, video editing and similar despite the offensive price tag.

I'd love a Mac.
Can't afford one, but they're worth the money.
If at least for bragging rights and the unwarranted sense of self-worth that you get from having a machine prettier than the one your neighbour does.

You should listen to the fanboy, he's right. Mac's offer higher basic quality across the board. That quality of course comes with a price - but you only get what you pay for. :p

My Husband was lucky enough to win a MacBook Air. I don't get to use it much,
but have found it great and easy to use. The great thing with mac is no virus
protection needed, so thats a saving in itself.
