The advent of the casual gamer has made gaming big business. The PS3 will catch up to the Wii, but what will happen to the Xbox 360?
Comment made about the PC Authority article: Video game market beats recession? Software and hardware sales to hit $57bn in 2009.

As i mentioned in the previous blog post about the Xbox 360 price change, I think the PS3 will have strong sales. The whole Blue Ray player thing has sold me. Given the whole idea of having minimal things at your lounge room I think many people will love the PS3 doubling as their main source of movies and entertainment. The Xbox 360 and the Wii will have no such capabilities unless Microsoft drastically does something like add a Blue Ray unit or vamps up its online resources. At the end of the day all everyone wants is a neat lounge room with good looking devices.
The XBOX 360 will die, the drivers of consoles sales now are casual games and multimedia. No matter how crap a casual game is it still sells better then half the titles on the 360 (see SSBB, Mario and Sonic Olympics, and Mario Party).
I think the challenge for the PS3 to catch the Wii is for them to develop games that can match the Wii in the casual gamer market. Could they possible take advantage of the controller or release a new add on that might take advantage of good graphics and innovative gaming? Its all in Sony's court really. |

Wii seems to have taken business from alot of people who were not previously gamers like families and the casual gamer. Apart from true Xbox fans, most other people that are interested in Serious gaming seem to be buying into the ps3 market. |

I've had the Wii for a while and its fantastic for when people come over as you don't have to be an avid gamer to pick up and play.
I recently bought the PS3 mainly for the latest batch of games that simply look and feel awesome (GTA / MGS4).
So I agree that the target audiences are different .. I'd have no hesitation recommending a Wii to my parents, for example .. (and I'd keep the PS3 .. haha)
In the consideration between XBox / Ps3 .. I think it was the Blue Ray that sold me .. even though it may not be as ideal as a stand-alone unit .. that was the difference that made my decision. |

A minimalist living room isn't my priority, three PCs in a dedicated room off the living room gives plenty of game space and never mind the clutter! |

I've been chasing a Wii for awhile now, and whenever im ready to purchase it they are sold out
I would imagine if they could keep up the supply levels better their sales would truly be unrivaled |

The Xbox 360 has just had a massive price cut, so don't count it out yet. But as for more active interaction/play, the wii certainly has a lot going for it. I was impressed with just getting my average in bowling on the wii, but its pretty light work in comparison to some of the other activities you can do. But as to what sells me in regards to purchasing a console. Well it was backwards compatability, but I have been dissapointed on that front with the xbox 360. These days I don't trade in old consoles if I wont to go back and play a favourite. |

It just shows what a long-term market is the gaming industry. Analysts predicting the rise of the PS3 only days after Sony announced losses of BILLIONS of dollars in their games arm! There's no doubt that we, the gaming public, are the winners - with ever cheaper consoles and games, and more variety than ever - DS, Wii, PS3, PSP and, oh yes, the Ex-Box! |
