HTC Touch Diamond users face 24-month contract

It's got the download speeds, the interface, services like Mobile Foxtel, and it's one of the first phones in the world with Windows Mobile 6.1. Is there a catch? Well, maybe.
We got our first hands on touch and feel with the new Touch Diamond today, and it's an impressive smartphone. You get 3G, GPS, camera, WiFi, 4GB storage, all in an 11.5mm high chassis. The phone itself is only 110grams, a huge difference to some of the very chunky smartphones on the market.

Crucially, the phone offers 7.2Mbps HSDPA on Telstra's wide-ranging Next-G network, something you won't get on the soon to be released iPhone 3G (unless Telstra decides to offer that too).

Other key features include:
- TouchFLO 3D interface, which includes swanky menus incorporating rolodex menus of your contacts, and animated weather forecasts
- 4GB memory built-in
- 2.8in VGA screen
- GPS
- 3.2Mp camera
- Windows Mobile Professional 6.1

So slim: the Touch Diamond is a mere 11.5mm high

While we're impressed with the spec, and the phone certainly looks slick in demos by HTC, we're still unsure about HTC's TouchFLO. It's certainly a friendlier interface than Windows Mobile, but in our very brief hands on play today, we found menu navigation slightly cumbersome. Maybe it was our clumsy fingers (we tried to avoid using the stylus), but we found ourselves having some difficulties.

The other catch is the contract. Like the iPhone, it looks as though Touch Diamond users will be stuck on lengthy 24 month contracts ($80 per month including voice and data), or pay $999 outright when the phone arrives in late July or early August.

I think you will find most phones contracts are 24 months no matter what make & model. How about a headline that highlights it as possibly the only phone to take on the iPhone head to head?

Beautiful phone!!! Techoni have these for pre-sale at $1099, so Telstra price $999 looks good. The 24 month contract is fine, as long as there's a reasonable data component. Once iPhone pricing is released we'll be able to make a proper comparison.

The iPhone 3G's maximum HSDPA speed is only 3.6Mbps, so it will NOT run any faster on Telstra NextG compared to the other 3G networks, and is slower than the Diamond.

I own a Touch Diamond, and the small form factor, beautiful design, comprehensive feature set, and screen quality makes it a good competitor to the 3G iPhone. The only thing going for the iPhone is its user interface and the hysterical hype. The HTC Diamond is probably more expensive, but it is a real quality phone.

I have used an 02XDA2 for years. It is a brick, slow with lousy reception but it was a huge leap forward when new and I have despite all its shortcomings loved it.... but it is dead. A really useful feature was the single button voice note feature. You could be driving down the road remember something grab the phone simply press the button (no need to go to a menu) and you could dictate anything. It saved it as a voice file under "notes". No I seem to believe the Touch Diamond has this feature but I cannot see any details. If you have to pick it up, tap something on the ecreen, push a button on the side to activate then you have probably crashed the car before you say the first word. Anone have and answer to this???
