Microsoft has released its first embedded OS for portable navigation devices (PND).

Windows NavReady 2009, according to the marketing cobblers, "delivers innovative technologies to help developers and OEMs quickly bring to market smart, connected, service-oriented PNDs that easily connect to online services, mobile phones using Bluetooth, Windows-based PCs and the Internet".

The biggest innovation seems to be Live Search, which hooks up to the World Wild Web and will grab useful information based on your location. A bit like Apple's new Iphone 2.0 software, then. Ahem.

Bluetooth will be fully incorporated, allowing hands-free operation of pretty much everything the device can do including making phone calls or data connections when the device is paired with a compatible phone.
