"And there are games that are open source and good for emulation out there."

Software that lets you run unsigned apps on the Wii have appeared online. But why hack your Wii? We list 5 things you "could" do with a hacked Wii.
According to the latest update of ‘The Homebrew channel, the Nintendo Wii has been hacked without the need for a modchip. Using a copy of Zelda as a backdoor into the system, the Wii is now open for modding.

So, what does that mean for the average Wii user? Not a lot, unless your a fan of the homebrew scene, which allows users access to a new range of applications not previously available on the retail version of the Wii.

5 reasons to hack your Wii:

1)Play TetrisStill rates as one of the world’s most addictive gaming experiences and is listed in the Guinness book of records as the world’s most ported game. With the latest edition of homebrew, you can control the Tetris blocks using your Wii controller – a unique spin on an old favourite.

2)Emulation. Run an N64 emulator using the new homebrew pack. N64 classics such as Mario 64, Donkey Kong 64 and super spy shooter, Goldeneye made a big impact back in the day and here's your chance to relive the halcyon days of Nintendo gaming on your Wii. Hopefully other emulators, such as the PS1 will also make an appearance.

3)No Money or soldering necessary. Most homebrew consoles such as the Xbox mod require a ‘modchip’ which usually needs to be sourced online and unless you have good soldering and experience, you’ll probably need to pay someone in the know close to $100 to get the job done. But with the latest version of Wii homebrew, all you need is a copy of Wii-Zelda and you can do it yourself at home for free without tools.

4)Go retro Connect old school Nintendo classic controllers to your Wii. It's been done before in this interesting Youtube video using the Nintendo Powerglove, an early Wii style IR technology. For the homebrew scene, it’s probably something that will be available a little further down the track, but it will be another good reason to get your Wii hacking cap on when it does.

5)Use Linux. Linux fans rejoice, there are Wii hacks around the place that allow your to run the Linux kernal on the console. This opens the door to all kinds of cool Wii apps using the power of open source code.

If your going to hack your wii, make sure you know what you're doing first.

It's perfectly legal to dabble in emulation if you own the actual copies of the games your emulating.
