There's more life in the x86 yet, with Intel pulling up to 8 core multi-threading out of its bag of tricks.
Nehalem will ship on schedule announced Intel CEO, Paul Otellini, on Wednesday.
Intel's next generation of 45nm processors, which will support up to 8 cores with simultaneous multi-threading, have been scheduled for release in the second half of 2008, and it looks like the company is on track to deliver on its promise.
At an annual shareholder meeting Otellini said, "Nehalem ... is still scheduled to launch in the second half of the year", and added that the firm would up its output of processors made on the new 45 nm technology.
Otellini went on to say: "We are on track to cross over in (the third quarter) of this year, so more than half our processors will be made on 45 nanometers."
There you have it. Straight from the horse’s mouth.
