Cuda, shoulda, might still
Nvidia has launched a Cuda Coding Contest designed, it says, to seek out the most talented Cuda programmers in the world.
The challenge is to optimise an MP3 encoder to run as fast as possible on a Cuda-enabled GPU.
Cuda is the programing environment used on Nvidia graphics cards. Nvidia will provide the source code of a partially GPU-optimised version of an MP3 Lame encoder for C progammers to fiddle with.
Competitors will have to modify the code in the Cuda environment to boost performance using the parallel architecture of the GPU. The fastest wins.
Submissions will be tested using the same sound file on a single PC running Linux.
The deadline for submissions is 25 July 2008 and the the fastest encoder will earn its coder a $5,000 prize.
The compo is only open to residents of the USA and Canada, it seems.
