Blue screens after installing the update are not an isolated incident, if online reports are to be believed..
Increasing numbers of Windows XP users are reporting problems after installing Service Pack 3.

Bloggers have reported blue screens of death and eternal reboot cycles, and the problems are causing increasing frustration.

"What a good idea, I thought, and spent quite a bit of time downloading and installing," wrote reader 'Mike Watson'.

"Two hours later, having despaired of getting my system back to where I could actually get some useful work done, I have uninstalled it and have no intention of trying again. I only hope that the routine updates work better."

'Manzana' commented: "I installed SP3 via automatic update. Restarted and got the BSOD. Haven't yet figured out why but the only way to get into Windows was to disable USB in the BIOS and then connect via LogMeIn, then do a system restore."

Feedback is not all negative, however. Some users praised the update, saying that their machines were running much faster.

A Microsoft employee believes that he may have some of the answers to the SP3 problems.

Dr Jesper Johansson said in his blog that the problems seem to hit AMD systems. "There are many possible reasons why a computer may crash at boot time," he wrote.

"SP3 seems to introduce two that are related to AMD-based computers and, possibly, one or two more that appear to affect Intel-based computers.

"Which one it is impacts which workaround you use. At this point, the information is still trickling in."

First Vista, now XP SP3, good job Microsoft. When will they learn? This surely must be damaging them massively and driving people to Macs? How are the less tech savvy meant to manage?

It's not just MS that has these problems. Do a search for "problems with leopard" and see how much people have had with the latest version of OSX. I use both Windows and Mac, and I find it amazing that both companies have so much trouble getting it right!

So if Leopard causes problems why do Apple not get the hard time and bad press that Microsoft gets? It would seem many are oblivious to any Apple issues. Does everyone just like to throw shit at Microsoft instead of praising them for what they have given us over the years?

Actually, the internet was flooding with Apple bashing around the time Leopard was released.

I think that the problems associated with SP3 only apply to HP's AMD based PC's....or so I've heard
I've experienced no problems with SP3 since the early betas, I've even gone so far as to slipstream SP3 into my XPpro disc (tho' I've kept the old SP2 copy.....)

After using Windows since the days of W3.1 I can sat that I have not a little experience in this area. My own experience tells me that anything new of a major nature should be undertaken on a clean slate. This is why I applied SP3 to a clean install of XP Home. I can say that I have had no issues with it to date.

I downloaded the service pack 3 and after installing it and rebooting I suddenly had errors ocurring that weren't there before. It turned out that it was the software form my DLink adapter wasn't friendly with Service pack 3 but after a bit of googling I found drivers to download on the DLink website and after installing them the errors were gone. Phew!

It always amazes me just how accepting we all are to the existence of buggy software in the first place!
fact is ALL current software has bugs, on one hand gladly part with our hard earned $ to grab the latest and greatest, and on the other bitch and complain when it falls over. perhaps we should start NOT paying for broken goods in the first place ?
There are however, some salient points to consider.

1 "clone" PC's are assembled from a vast array of differing components, assuring compatibility with them all is nigh on impossible.

2 not all software plays well with others, for the same reasons as 1/.

For these very reasons, NASA uses positively ancient technology computing power for space flight, because it is the most stable reliable and trustworthy. So dust of the old '88 and go back to DOS if you want stable, or roll up your sleeves and be prepared to get a bit bloody if you want to play on the bleeding edge.

And always remember, to err may be human - but to realy stuff up, you need a computer.

Guys,
I'm not sure where the problem lies. I downloaded the latest SP3 patch and imaged it on to a cd. I have since installed it on 3 pcs running XP with SP2 and have had no problems, so far. Be careful when downloading because the first version of SP3 was definitely buggy.

You're obviously not a programmer.

It's hard to create software without bugs, and an OS is definitely no exception.

I have been playing with XP SP3 for a while and most of the time it has behaved. The only real problem I had was that Trend Internet Security 2008 spit the dummy. But after having to go back to version 2007 for a while Trend came up with an update that worked.

I thought the HP AMD XP SP3 woes were dead and buried. HP loaded an Intel optimised image on their AMD systems. When SP3 loaded, it saw the Intel code and loaded Intel specific code, causing the the system to BSOD.
The problem was caused by HP.
