Who says PC Authority doesn’t have the authority to get things changed? Just a day after we post a story comparing the relative value of the iMac against desktop PCs, Apple’s announced a refresh of the iMac.
We’d like to think we played an important part in this decision – but then, we’d like to think lots of improbable things.
Apple does this kind of refresh quite frequently, and on the outside, not much has changed – the new iMacs sport the same aluminium frames as the old ones, but inside you’ll find upgraded memory, processors up to 3.06Ghz and better graphics cards. The range starts at $1,599 for the 20" iMac model (2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo, 1GB RAM, 250GB HDD, ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT 128MB) and goes all the way up to the bulky $2,999 24" iMac, which sports a 3.06Ghz Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, 500GB HDD and NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS 512MB.
Apple’s local Web site estimates the lower spec iMacs to be ready to ship within 24 hours for the terminally keen, but those after the 3.06GHz variant will have to wait 2-4 business days.
