Saving space on your desk will be easier under Dell’s plan for a desktop more than three-quarters smaller than today’s boxes. Anyone heard of Shuttle?
News that Dell is working on a new, smaller desktop is reported by Computerworld, who says Dell chairman dropped news that the company is working a desktop “81% smaller than a standard minitower machine”.
According to the Computerworld article, Dell said the new mini-PC will be the “smallest . . . consumer desktop”. It’s not clear yet whether that includes the mini business desktops on the market, such as Acer’s Veriton.
While we welcome the news, it’ll be interesting to see what sort of limitations the small PCs have. Limited upgradeability is likely to hamper the attractiveness of mini-PCs with gamers and upgraders.
And while we’re on the topic, what about Shuttle? Shuttle barebones PCs have been a fixture on the home market for years, without causing any major revolutions in PC design. Small laptops are one thing, but is the small PC a pipe dream?
