ATI still racing

ATI has announced a new set of graphics chips which looks set to maintain the performance lead over NVIDIA. The new chips, codenamed R280, R350 will cater for both the value and performance ends of the spectrum, while rumour has it that the R400 is just around the corner.

The R350 or Radeon 9800 will up the ante set by its successful predecessor, the 9700 while the R280 or Radeon 9200 series is ATI's new low performance, budget card. Both cards are due around April/May.

While not officially announced, the as-yet-unnamed R400 is ATI's next killer card, featuring a memory core of 400MHz, AGP 8X and should further extend the lead over Nvidia's lacklustre effort, the GeForceFX. There is no confirmed release date as yet, but the card looks set to be announced in the coming weeks.
