Nvidia unveils 9600 GT, admits frame rates getting "stressful"

by William Maher  on Feb 26, 2008
"Its also not fair to use a poorly written/designed game engine, such as Crysis to judge a video card. Perhaps people need to start blaming the Crysis authors instead of the video card company."

New card replaces 8600 GTS and aims for playable DirectX 10 performance without breaking the bank.
It seems we weren't the only ones complaining about the poor performance of expensive graphics cards in DirectX 10 games.

Even nVidia is admitting games have "outpaced" graphics hardware, though it’s a cunning marketing ploy to pitch its new value card the 9600GT. Citing games like Call of Duty 4 and Unreal Tournament 3, nVidia is bemoaning the cost of cards powerful enough to achieve "stressful" frame rates at high resolutions like 1900 x 1200.

Tell us something we don't know. As we reported earlier even new cards like ATI's 3870 are struggling to shine when pitted against punishing tasks like Crysis.

So can the 9600GT turn the situation around for casual gamers? The hype is that this is a value-card that copes under the strain of high-resolution gaming, though we note no mention of Crysis in the press release.

The card is being touted as a replacement for the 8600GTS, though the various initial test reports around the Web indicate the card is a worthy rival to ATI's Radeon HD 3850 and Radeon HD 3870 (though not the X2 version, of course). Our friends over at Atomic are very impressed by what they've seen on the bench so far.

nVidia's new baby is certainly affordable - we've seen it online for less than $250. For the money, you get a 650MHz core clock speed, with 1625MHz shader speed and 64 stream processors. The card works with PCIe 2.0 and comes with 512MB, and nVidia's H.264 decoding engine.
