Apple unloads 32GB iPod touch, and it’s not cheap

The touch gets double the capacity, but at $629 we’re tapping our fingers for that iPhone to launch.

We are torn between the iPod touch and waiting for the iPhone, and today’s new 32GB iPod touch isn’t helping. Capacity has doubled, which is great, but the price isn’t for the faint hearted – the new model is $629, while you pay $499 for the 16GB, and $399 for the 8GB. All models are available now through the Apple site and authorised resellers.

On the upside, the recent apps upgrade makes the iPod touch almost on par with the iPhone, bar the phone function of course. You now get Google Maps, Mail, Weather and Notes, and the Home screen is customisable. If you’re not attracted to the idea of ditching your smartphone, then you can get the iPhone look and feel now.

On the other hand it will be interesting to see what eventuates once Apple lets developers loose on the iPhone (and iPod touch). The software developer kit will reportedly arrive this month, and we’re willing to bet that if there’s a killer app in the works, it might be Web-based, and better suited to the iPhone.
