Media Streamers

A PC in the lounge room too complex and cluttered? You need a media adaptor.
Having a PC in the lounge room is a great idea, but it's not always feasible from a practical or aesthetic point of view. If you've got a lot of movies, music and photos and want to show and play them on your TV and stereo but really don't want a PC there, a media adaptor is exactly what you need.

These are hybrid components of PC and hi-fi technology that helpfully bridges the gap between the two, and leaves your PC free for other tasks in the other room. They connect to your machine via Ethernet or even wirelessly, and are operated from your lounge via remote control. The best feature though is the PC is usually unhampered by their operation, so you can watch a movie in the lounge room with surround sound while your partner does the real work of budgeting for the home on the same PC in the study.
We've rounded up four of the best and put them to the test with a wide variety of files and formats, including MP3s, DiVX movies, JPEGs and even DVDs.
