It is exactly one year since the PC Authority Labs team last took an in-depth look at the world of digital cameras in Digital Darkroom, May 2001. This month, it was time again for the Labs team to cast its investigative eye on digital photography to see if and how things have progressed. Well, it is no understatement to say that things have progressed a long way, given the phenomenal growth in the digital camera market place.
As you will soon see, the digital photography space is rapidly filling with quality products, all competing for a piece of the growing pie. The attraction to digital photography is spreading among the uninitiated, as those with PCs begin to realise what this potent combination is capable of.
Armed with a PC, some image manipulation software, perhaps a photo printer, and of course a digital camera, you then have yourself a virtual editing studio and darkroom to exercise and nurture your digital artistry talents or potential talents as the case may be to whatever end you please.
The brief this time around was to supply the Labs with digital cameras at the entry level through to high-end consumer models for an across-the-board analysis of what is available for every type of potential user.
We were instantly inundated with cameras and accessories for the explicit purpose of some serious photographic study.
With 18 cameras in total, and 16 included in the actual roundup, the Labs team has striven to provide you with the definitive picture of the state of play in digital photography, as well as provide some handy information on useful extras to get you up and running (see Its all in the cards, p97).
If pixel power is where you wish to be at, then look no further than this months Labs.
Happy snapping!
