The advantages of an LCD display over a conventional CRT are well known - dramatic savings in terms of space, reduced energy consumption, less radiation and heat generation, easier alignment of geometry, and near perfect focus at the optimal resolution - yet, for many, it still a tough decision to actually go into a store and purchase a TFT screen that is at least two or three times the amount they would pay for an equivalent sized CRT monitor.
Over the past couple of years TFT screen prices have dropped, viewing angles have been increased, pixel response times have reduced and brightness and contrast ratios have increased, getting closer to the levels supported by CRT monitors. A couple of years ago a 13.8in screen of reasonable quality would have sold for well over $3,000, and a 15in screen would have cost well in excess of $4,000. These days, top quality 15in screens, roughly the equivalent in viewable area to a 17in CRT, are available for a less exorbitant price.

This month we have put together the most extensive comparative test of TFT screens found on Australian store shelves today. The screens on test are representative of the best that are around under $3,000, which is the most that we expect that an individual would be willing to pay for this technology.

Weve also implemented the most rigorous TFT display testing procedures performed by any IT publication in this country to date. Not only do we have the latest version of the excellent and feature packed DisplayMate diagnostics applications with dedicated LCD test scripts to guide us through, but we have also included a truly objective test in the form of the powerful Minolta CA-100 colour analyser, which is usually reserved for use by monitor manufacturers and diagnostic technicians.

Ultimately, given the choice between a 15in TFT and any 17in CRT, there is not one of the Labs staff who wouldnt put their hands up for a TFT in performing their normal day to day office duties. What our extensive testing determines is exactly what youre getting for your money.
