This is similar to the last shot, but in colour. The grey patched of ground are where the soil has been blown away by the rockets used to lower Curiosity to the surface, and show what NASA believes to be the Martian bedrock.

In Pictures: (Almost) Live from Mars

We have been keeping one eye on NASA this week as it used a supersonic parachute and rocket powered sky-crane to land a rover the size of a small card on a whole other planet. In honour of how freaking amazing that is here are some of the first photos published from the Curiosity mission.
