In Pictures: Sony World Photography Awards 2012While we normally focus our attention on camera hardware, sometimes it's good to step back and remember that photography is about the moment. One form of inspiration is looking at the work of others. The winners of Sony's 2011 World Photography Awards were announced last month, with US photographer Mitch Dobrowner taking out the prestigious L’Iris D’Or for his arresting portraits of Appalachian storms in Tornado Alley. In the following gallery, we've assembled some of the best nature, wildlife and environmental photos from this year's competition, including the winners of the Professional, Open and Student categories. Many of the photographers chose to let their pictures speak for themselves, but we've included commentary where given. Click on each photo to enlarge.
