Grand Theft Auto III (Rockstar Games, 2001) Grand Theft Auto III needs no introduction for a reason: it was the first video game to be specifically linked to real-life murders in court. The game was cited in several high-profile cases in North America, usually involving "GTA obsessed" teenage males charged with offenses ranging from robbery to murder. Several of these trials involved the anti-video game activist Jack Thompson, who accused GTA III of being a murder simulator which trained kids to kill. For example, in the Cody Posey triple-murder case, Thompson claimed the defendant "essentially practiced how to kill on this game. If it wasn't for Grand Theft Auto, three people might not now be dead." While the jury is still out, the link between violent games and violent crimes has since entered the public consciousness.
