If you're looking to create abstract closeups, incense sticks are a good bet: they produce a steady, manageable stream of smoke that moves in slow, interesting tendrils. For the best results, shoot in complete darkness and use a black, non-reflective background, such as a sheet of cloth or non-glossy cardboard (the above photo has had the colours inverted).
