It arguably all started with Space Invaders, when a nameless spaceship pilot heroically battled an endless onslaught of tentacle-sprouting nasties. Since then, gaming protagonists have matured in looks and complexity until they can proudly compete with their movie brethren. In the following gallery, we countdown who we believe are the best game heroes of all time. We've tried to cast our net wide, with plenty of nods to the 16- and 8-bit days.
