<h2>#5 Sony PlayStation (1994 - 2006)</h2>The original PlayStation marked the year when gaming finally grew up. Previously dismissed as toys for kids and nerdy eccentrics, the PSX ushered in a new era of mainstream acceptance. Buoyed by high-profile releases like Tomb Raider, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and Wipeout, the PlayStation made it cool to be a gamer. More importantly, the games were a revolutionary step forward in terms of graphics and gameplay. The PlayStation's 3D Geometry Engine was able to compete directly with arcade machines, leading to the latter's decline in fotunes. But gamers had the last laugh: we suddenly had an arcade parlor in our bedrooms.
