First Look: ASUS M51 Va, Centrino 2 benchmarks are in

Monday August 11, 2008
AUD
$1999
Price at time of review.

Intel has been banging on about Centrino 2 lately, so it was good to finally get a chance to test the claims courtesy of a spanking new mid-range Centrino 2 M51 Va courtesy of ASUS.

Some of the best performance and battery results we've seen for a 15.4 inch laptop with dedicated graphics

Nice specs, but does it come with a 14.1 inch screen? Most systems I see with a choicw of 14 or 15 inch screens lose 300 or so grams and are smaller to pack. Yet the other important specs seldom change, while battery life can go up a bit.

not bad - does anyone know about how it handles 3d graphic programs?

So what is the point here? I can buy a more powerful laptop for less than $2k. I thought Centrino 2 was going to deliver better battery life through reduced power usage. Not yet with this Asus anyway

It’s the most expensive laptop we’ve looked at yet. David Hollingworth ponders if you get the right amount of bang for your buck.
