Powerful laptops have to be big, bulky and ugly, right? Not necessarily. Samsung's new line of laptops is proving that portability, style and performance are not necessarily mutually exclusive.

The Samsung M40 plus is a slick and stylish notebook, but unfortunately just doesn’t cut it compared to the others on test here.

The SM181T uses a panel based on Samsung’s own PVA technology. This stands for patterned vertical alignment and increases the viewing angle in the same way as MVA, although Samsung claims a viewing angle of 170 degrees – the same as Super-IPS.

The SyncMaster 172X from Samsung was a bit of a powerhouse in our tests, scoring highly in all regards except one: surprisingly the monitor was a little over-saturated, meaning whites looked a little washed out, and this would not change regardless of how we tweaked and fiddled with the screen’s settings. However in day-to-day usage you’d barely notice this.

Samsung's smallest and most attractive mono laser, the ML-1510 is a speedy little printer with plenty of potential for the sub-$500 price bracket. So good in fact that we had to recommend it for its above average scores in all categories.

Although similar products have been available (with much controversy) in the US for a few years, the Samsung DVD-H40A is the first Personal Video Recorder (PVR) to reach our sunny shores.

A promising debut for UMPCs, but the controls are tricky to master

There was very little to separate the top two but this month there was very little disgrace in finishing second for Samsung.

It's not often that a company releases a product that is as functional as it is stylish, and can wow the masses in droves. Samsung's D500 does just this, combining the looks of its last generation E800 slide phone and a feature set to rival anything currently on the market.

It wasn't too long ago that mono-lasers by themselves cost over $500, but now that colour lasers have dropped in price, mono-lasers, too, have shuffled down a peg. Samsung has delivered a laser printer with a decent scanner for a very low price. It's a SOHO device, but without some of the features associated with that, such as faxing and document feeders.  

Samsung has made some noise recently about its MP3 players and this example is at the forefront of this product family.

Take the ultimate DVD drive and remove one feature. Now up the speed. Now drop the price.

Fast, cheap to run and offering flawless text quality, this is a great-value option.
