After conducting our DVD burner labs last month and seeing the emergence of cheap high-speed single format drives such as the Labs winning Ricoh and BenQ models at a mere $299, it's hard to go back to the $499 price tag of the Iomega drive.
If your main focus is avoiding the eventuality of obsolescence if a single DVD format winner is crowned master, this burner is for you. It's able to burn not only DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW but also type II DVD-RAM non-caddy discs, which should pretty much cover any format concerns you've got. That said the SuperDrive performed slower than each of the burners in last month's roundup, writing a 2GB DVD-R disc in just over 8 minutes.
Supplied with an IDE cable, mounting screws, audio cable and a software bundle which includes Iomega's CD/DVD burning software, MYDVD 4, Cineplayer 1.5, MusicMatch Jukebox and Iomega Auto Backup. The latter is capable of backing up to DVD from ZIP, hard disc drives and Iomega NAS devices.
As with the LG GSA-4040B, if you're patient and don't mind marginally longer burning times, this is perfect for you, if not, consider a cheaper single format DVD writer or more expensive 'plus' and 'minus' drive.
