Great image quality and plenty of enthusiast features for a very reasonable price

This is a hugely powerful camcorder in a remarkably tiny package – and it’s great value, too.

Overall, I am very happy with this camera. Excellent picture, amazingly good image stabilisation which allows hand held telephoto shots. I have the external microphone as well, which gives excellent sound recording.
Included battery somewhat small, and Canon no longer include a separate battery charger, so have to recharge using camera. This is available as an expensive accessory. Also, using joystick on LCD screen for manual control is fiddly..I would have preferred a lens focus ring.

Canon are only the second manufacturer in the Australian market to provide a flash based video camera (Panasonic is the other). Daniel Long gives his first impressions.

Despite the $600 price gap there are only a few small but important differences between the 238E and the 270E. For example, the 238E has a smaller LCD display; a black and white viewfinder; and no S-connector input. Apart from that, the technology is essentially identical: both have the same 1.16-megapixel CCD as well as 12x optical zoom. As a result, the quality of the images is similar.
