The Century CD does its job well, but it is an expensive alternative to the bulging, disorganised shelf.
Designed in Melbourne, the Century CD can store up to 100 discs but instead of using the shelf-like arrangement of the Fortuna (reviewed March 2002, page 90), the Century CD sports a turntable arrangement reminiscent of old carousel slide projectors.

Its 100-disc capacity outshines the Fortuna, and the control software is friendlier, if somewhat similar. This Dynamic Data Storage (DDS) software is used for cataloguing discs, which can be sorted by name, type, or whether discs are in the Century holder or logged out. Entering disc information is usually performed manually when you slide a disc into the Century unit, but it can also read information and automatically detect a CD in your PCs drive. Just like the Fortuna this emphasizes the one main problem with the unit: that there are no disc readers built in.
Disc retrieval is extremely fast, and you can enter the name of the person that is checking out the CD. Discs can also be password protected with individual passwords, and upon installation there is the ability to also enter a Super password, which can override any other and is particularly helpful for when passwords get forgotten.
The product Website boasts that you can store up to 12,700 discs with consecutive (and stackable) Century CDs, but this relies on the nature of USB and its ability to daisy-chain 127 products; unfortunately the Century CD doesnt have a USB pass-through.
At $348 the Century CD is an expensive way to organise CDs and DVDs, but its ability to reduce clutter and centralise collections could prove a boon to schools and businesses.
