Lite-On’s DVD writer was our A-List choice for almost a year. At the time we said it was practically perfect – offering compatibility with every format, plus Lightscribe, for a bargain price. But Asus has managed to trump it.
At last native SATA support is available for optical drives – no more fat IDE ribbons. Asus also keeps the DRW-1814BLT nice and short (just 170mm) meaning it will easily fit in very small form factor cases. It supports every format including 14x DVD-RAM writing – though getting compatible RAM2 media will prove tricky for now.
It also burns DVD+R and DVD-R discs at 18x. Indeed, in our tests, which use Nero CD-DVD Speed (www.cdspeed2000.com) it filled our 4.7GB 16x Verbatim DVD in five-and-a-half minutes – an average speed of 13x. With such features and speed it’s a steal at this price.
