hmmm, no WiFi, though it does have 3G. I’ve seen that a few times – either WifI, or 3G.

At least with 3G you’ll have access everywhere (in theory). I’d look for something compatible with Optus/Telstra 3G. And I’d avoid Three till they get network fixed : )

In my experience, the 3G coverage is limited, and you run into excess charges in these situations with Three. That said, I hear they're upgrading their network

Don't 3 connections roam to telstra when there aren't any 3 towers available?

Do they roam to 3g speeds, or slower?

Yup, they roam to non-3G, and you've got to pay extra for the privilege (of slower speeds).
