A tiny, fast personal laser printer with a temping price and great quality.

HP has a huge range of laser printers, stretching from enormous 50ppm A3 corporate behemoths with full finishing capabilities to diminutive 10ppm personal lasers. Of all the printers in its considerable arsenal, its biggest seller by far is the LaserJet 4100 series...

Despite the recent flood of low-priced, high-quality inkjet printers, theres been comparatively little movement on the budget laser front, with Kyoceras FS-1000 (reviewed issue 34, p85) dominating our A-List since September last year.

Well-equipped and quite quick, but the quality is patchy

The LBP-2410’s real strength clearly lay in its speed, as opposed to its print quality. It was the third fastest printer overall, but fell in the shadow of the Labs Winner OKI C5100 for printing times and TCO over both low and high monthly duty cycles.

For a laser printer manufacturer, GCC has an unusual history. Formed in 1981, the company originally developed enhancements for coin-operated video games such as Ataris Missile Command and also brought us PacMan.

It wasn't too long ago that mono-lasers by themselves cost over $500, but now that colour lasers have dropped in price, mono-lasers, too, have shuffled down a peg. Samsung has delivered a laser printer with a decent scanner for a very low price. It's a SOHO device, but without some of the features associated with that, such as faxing and document feeders.  

Clearly finishing first in the colour laser category, the C5100 is the pinnacle of affordable laser printing. Big and bulky, it doesn’t have a small footprint though, so be prepared to give up some of your workspace for it.

As most of the devices we tested consisted of inkjet units, we were interested to see how the laser printer in the MFC-4600 stacked up. Relatively lacking in features, the MFC-4600 is geared toward productivity, performing well in our speed tests.

A good quality and speedy colour laser printer, but the running costs are unsettlingly high.

Samsung's smallest and most attractive mono laser, the ML-1510 is a speedy little printer with plenty of potential for the sub-$500 price bracket. So good in fact that we had to recommend it for its above average scores in all categories.

The 2300 series, HP's new laser offering for the small to medium-sized workgroup, includes a myriad of significant improvements over the previous 2200 series.

An interesting new technology, but cheap running costs are let down by poor quality.

Fast, cheap to run and offering flawless text quality, this is a great-value option.

The first thing we noticed about this printer was its strange physical resemblance to the Labs Winner, and significantly more expensive, HP LaserJet 1300. There are plenty of technical specs to differentiate the two, including RAM, print resolution and OS support, all swinging in HP’s favour though.

Ignore the price – incredibly low running costs Make this a winner.
