Dell 2407WFP - now with no banding!

The very best (and cheapest!) LCD just got a major performance upgrade. No more banding!
Today Dell sent us a ‘new’ version of the excellent 2407WFP 24in LCD monitor (previously reviewed here.)

While this was easily the best all-round LCD monitor we’d ever tested (for value, features and support as much as picture quality) we did point out that where its predecessor, the 2405WFP, displayed some of the best colour gradients we’d ever seen on an LCD, there was noticeable banding in gradient tests on the new model.

This ‘flaw’ (which affects some 99% of all LCD monitors anyway) generated a minor hysteria on the Internet even though few users (other than some high-end graphics professionals who should be buying top-end Eizo monitors anyway) would ever notice the banding in real-world situations. Some people also reported that text could appear blurry in office documents and on the desktop.

Well we’ve tested the new version and the gradients are back to the high standards set by the 2405WFP.

At the time of writing it wasn’t clear whether Dell considered the previous issues to be faults worthy of a replacement. It’s also unclear whether prospective buyers will get the ‘old’ version or the ‘fixed’ version if they place an order.

Above: The delicious Dell 2407WFP with smooth colour gradients.

Also, we found no issues with any blurry text.

Text as sharp as you'd want it.

Quite simply, if you’re interested in buying this monitor we, as we did before, recommend you do. If you really can’t live with any performance issues you can make use of Dell’s outstanding two-week satisfaction guarantee and return it no question asked. However, once you’ve got this 24in gem in front of you, we sincerely doubt you’d want to let anyone take it away from you for any reason.
