Take the Monolith from 2001 A Space Odyssey and let it display an image. That's the sense of enormity you feel when looking at this behemoth.
We encountered this 220 kilogram monster at this year’s CeBIT conference. After gazing at it in awe for several minutes, we couldn’t find strong enough words to describe the enormity of this, the largest plasma panel in the world.
At 2.6 metres diagonally, it is larger than a double bed; which puts the ideal viewing distance at eight metres away from the screen. It consumes 1500 watts of power during use, which lets it double as a heater. It costs $130,000 including installation, making it likely that those who can afford it will knock out and then replace a wall of their house during installation.
Instead of being provided with a standard selection of inputs, a single fixed VGA input is provided in addition to three custom input expansion slots. The interchangeable terminals will give you one of eleven different inputs, one of which will add an HDMI connector to the list of inputs.
HD content was made to be appreciated on screens of this size. High end projectors can rival the scale, but not the black levels and colourimetry that we saw on this display. Now we just need to wait for more HD content. And to find an oil reserve under our property.
