Simon Edwards shows you how to get up and running with SmoothWall

1. Download the latest version of SmoothWall from www.smoothwall.org, burn the ISO file to a CD and boot from it on a spare PC. It's sensible to have a diagram of your basic network layout and IP address ranges to hand before you start.

  2. Your IDE hard disk will be partitioned and formatted. SmoothWall detects your network card and asks for the IP address and subnet mask. It will then install the software, after which you answer questions about ADSL, ISDN and web proxies. Disable ISDN if you're not using it, and ADSL if you have an Ethernet router.

  3. By default SmoothWall chooses a Green (internal) and Red (external) interface combination, and assigns Red to a modem. Choose network configuration type, selecting Green + Orange + Red if you want to host a server. Choose drivers and card assignments to detect other network cards and set them as Orange and Red interfaces.

  4. Assign IP addresses to each interface. Choose PPPoE for the Red interface to connect a USB ADSL modem to the firewall (although an Ethernet ADSL modem providing DHCP could provide a dynamic IP address). Our firewall is connected via an ADSL router that acts as a DNS server and gateway. We'll use a static IP address.
