More sophisticated offerings, such as Yahoo Chess, offer a multitude of different rooms where players can test themselves against other human opponents from around the globe and compete for the bragging rights and/or rankings Yahoo assigns regular players. Similar schemes are cropping up all over the Internet. Microsofts Zone is probably the largest such gaming portal online. Not only does it cater for online play of Microsofts own products (for example, the Motocross Madness and Age of Empires series), it also offers a massive selection of board and card games for people of all skill levels and interests. The future looks bright for this model.

Expect these games to become more and more sophisticated as the speed and quality of Internet access improves, while still remaining accessible via your Web browser. An inevitable result of the growth of this area is the likely increase in the number of sites that charge a small regular fee for playing. That said, there will always be sites on the Net that offer free gaming for the masses. There has been a massive increase in the amount of online gambling in recent months, although this issue is a feature in itself.

Community involvement

You may have noticed the use of the word community to describe the groups of players who play online - its an apt description. For many who play online, and especially those who play frequently, the experience extends beyond a mere pixellated blast against other humans. Given that most games played online allow some degree of communication between players, usually in the form of text messages, its virtually guaranteed that any game you play is going to involve you on a larger scale than ever before. Many gamers also chat outside of the game using Internet Relay Chat (IRC). Within the sanctity of custom rooms or channels gamers can discuss and debate a whole range of topics. Players use IRC as well as programs such as ICQ and Microsoft NetMeeting to arrange games with each other and keep in touch. However, the lack of face-to-face contact in relation to online gaming is a double-edged sword. The same freedom that allows you the option to play online in relative anonymity is also extended to everyone else. So, depending on the game, you may well encounter instances of childish or immature behaviour.
