A software vendor recently accused all its competitors of not being GST-compliant in a national newspaper. If the same lines of reason were applied to the ATO, it wouldnt be GST compliant either. You dont have to be the sharpest knife in the drawer to work out that with the legislation changing weekly and the Business Activity Statement (BAS) still in draft stage, software vendors will not be ready with a final product. As it stands, the BAS includes the reporting of Fringe Benefits Tax liability, which the software in this part of the market has never claimed to be able to calculate. I couldnt see what all the fuss was about.
Speaking of the sharpest knife in the drawer, whoever at MYOB is responsible for an advertising strategy that has thousands of bus ads using the words GST, Ready, and OK, with big ticks everywhere, could have anticipated being misunderstood slightly.
In any case, if nothing changes too much before July 1st, most of us will be getting figures from more than one report in our accounting package and transferring them onto a BAS form on the ATO Web site or even on paper. How easy these figures are to obtain and relate to the boxes on the BAS is important, and well look at that.
