But the Internet is not just providing stockbrokers with a new shopfront, companies with outlets for investor relations, discussion groups to decide what to buy and global exchange alliances.
Soon the Internet will be the stock market. Americas Nasdaq exchange has announced plans to establish a stock market accessible via the Web, trading non-stop around the world. Mr Les Hosking, immediate past Chief Executive of the Sydney Futures Exchange, says the Internet will replace geographic-specific exchange buildings as the futures share trading platform. Investors will gain Internet access to almost any derivative product offered anywhere... and we will ultimately lose the execution point (of trading on markets) to the ether, to the net, he said. But whatever entry point investors use to trade shares - and whether or not the Internet plays a role - financial advisers agree the fundamentals of investment will still apply.
Ensure you research your chosen investment field thoroughly, know the risk of what you are buying into and make sure it suits your own risk tolerance and investment time frame, and diversify your investments to spread your risk. Most importantly of all dont be afraid to exit the investment if it turns bad.
