As we reported this week, Telstra is holding all the cards when it comes to high-speed access for Internet and email on your smartphone. The carrier this week announced 6 new phones for the Next G network, including the impressive Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1.

There are some standout phones - notably Nokia's E71 - still missing from this list. We asked Telstra about this, and they told us the E71 is not compatible with Next G. The hope is that quad-band 3G phones which work with all local carriers will solve this problem, but they're not here yet. Until then, we'd recommend looking at the Blackberry devices on this list.

We asked Telstra for the full list of Next G compatible phones/PDAs, which we've listed here:

It would be usefull if links to all the mentioned phones were included in the article, with out the links the said decriptions become rather limp and usuless....

I bought a Nokia N95 a month ago to gain advantage of 3G network. Guess what within a month screen has gone totally black so I don't know whether it was on or not! First faulty Nokia I've ever had. I still have my original brick. Oh and to get rid of dead zones one had to buy a $30 extension aerial. AAAHHHHH! And I do live within 60 km of Melbourne down by the sea.

It's nice to have this list, however it doesn't seem very current. One phone that Telstra'a web site mentions is the Treo Pro PDA, which isn't here.
Also, I think the list would be easier to use if sorted alphabetically.
