Donkey Kong - (Atari edition cover)

CBS once had the rights to designing the cover art for these games - the curious result somehow resembles Italian horror movie posters from the 70s, with Mario as an aging Italian superhero.

Platform: Intellivision

The adventures of Bayou Billy

America’s answer to Australia’s Crocodile Dundee resulted in an in-bred hunchback that may or may not have been big hit with the kids. Gameplay seemingly combines fighting pimps and winning over the heart of the town brothel worker.

Platform: NES

Donkey Kong (Mexico cover art)

At first glance, it’s almost impossible to tell what is happening in the picture, but it looks exactly like the kind of abstract, nightmarish dreams that you’re likely to have by playing too much Atari 2600 and eating too many black bean burritos. If only we could see the alternate Mexican covers for Super Mario and Zelda.

Platform: Atari 2600

Pacman (Atari edition cover)

This game cover was developed for the Atari in a surrealist style, providing a unique view of how Pacman (in his athletic gear, no less) might actually look like in real life.

Platform: Atari 400/800

Vib Ribbon

You have to admire Sony for trying something different here - black and white sketch pad doodlings didn't quite catch on within the wider game art world, but Vib Ribbon at least looked different to everything else on the shelf.

Platform: PlayStation
