Many of us have a fast broadband Internet connection, with around 1Mb/sec of outgoing bandwidth, more than enough to handle a handful of Internet users that want to download and share files with your computer. With this spare bandwidth and the fact that your computer isn’t being used through the night, why don’t you setup your own web server and use this server to host your own low-key website or to provide downloads for friends and family?

Better still, head over to the Apple UK refurbished store and pick yourself up a Core Duo Mac mini for as low as £339. The Apple Mac mini makes an ideal web server. Fast, very quiet and low cost. It can sit in your living room without disturbing your peace.

The Abyss Web Server is a small server aimed at cross-platform computer users who simply want to set up a basic web server that will serve other Internet users. As it’s cross-platform, you can configure the same web server across Windows, Mac and Linux platforms.

This free web server isn’t lacking in features, either. For instance, it supports HTTP/1.1, dynamic content generation through CGI scripting, native ASP.NET support without further extensions, password protection, bandwidth throttling and so much more. If security is an issue, there’s an automatic anti-hacking feature, too.

Note that some additional features may only be found within Abyss Web Server X2. The download here is for the free Abyss Web Server X1.
