Oligo is the latest browser to hit the marketplace, and claims to provide internet surfers with a unique, "personalised surfing experience".
The key selling point for Oligo is the fact that you can alter the browser's shape, style and colour to practically anything you wish - no need to settle for the standard browser. This is achieved through the use of skins, of which there are plenty available for download from the Inklineglobal website.
This may sound good, but in reality serves little purpose: what difference does it make what shape your browser is, particularly as the window that actually loads the webpage remains square? Also, as the available skins deviate from the traditional square shape, a lot of screen space is taken up by wasted space that could otherwise be used for displaying the webpage itself.
Also, we were unable to resize many of the skins we tested. Our browser occupied only about a quarter of the screen, making viewing webpages tiresome and fiddly - we were contantly having to scroll up, down, left and right to read the information. Several skins, however, are resizable.
In terms of functionality, Oligo comes with just the basic functions, such as the ability to bookmark webpages, print, and, suprisingly, view the source code of the webpage. This is an odd inclusion in a browser that appears to be aimed at the light user or internet beginner.
Functions such as built-in search facilities and the ability to view your surfing history are absent, again making your browsing experience more hassle than it should be.
On the positive side, Oligo does render pages a little faster than Explorer or Netscape appear to; and you can create settings for specific websites that enable you to view webpages in fonts and colours that you like. This might be useful for the visually impaired user, who could display text in a size and colour suitable for their needs.
