If you're running an older operating system you may need to update the Windows Common Control Library on your PC. Directory Snoop will inform you if you need to update on installation. See the Briggsoft website (below) for more details.

Directory Snoop is a small, low-level security utility for wiping sensitive data, recovering erased data, and searching for hidden data at the cluster level.

Take a trawl through your File Allocation Table (FAT), and purge any orphaned file names directly from the directory structure. Both FAT 16 and FAT 32 are supported, but the program cannot be used on NTFS drives.

Some of the main features include:

  • View raw directory structures and file clusters
  • Map files and directories to cluster numbers
  • Verify the effectiveness of file/disk wiping programs
  • Search, group, and sort files by name, date, cluster, size, and attributes
  • Permanently erase files and individual clusters with multi-pass wiping function
  • Wipe free space area to prevent erased file recovery.

The most useful feature of this program is the ability to completely wipe free hard disk space to ensure none of the previous data on that space is recoverable.

The program supports uncompressed FAT12/FAT16/FAT32 disks (hard drive(s), floppy, Zip, Jaz and CompactFlash).
