Internet Explorer Critical Security Update

Impressive and free antivirus and antispyware package

Platform : Windows 2000, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT, Windows XP

Type:

Manufacturer: Microsoft

Size: 1.88MB - 2.47MB (depending on IE version)

Rating: 4

Verdict: A great antivirus and antispyware program at no cost

System Requirements:
This security update applies to Internet Explorer version 5.01 (Service Pack 2 for Windows 2000 and NT), version 5.5 (Service Pack 1 & 2) and version 6.

This download has been available since 28 March and is a cumulative patch for Internet Explorer (versions 5.01-6) that has been largely ignored by users.

Microsoft has classified this as a "critical update" that users should download immediately.

Along with addressing all older security problems fixed in previous updates, this download fixes two new vulnerabilities:

  1. A vulnerability that could allow a script embedded in a cookie to be run on a local machine. An attacker could place script in a cookie that would be saved to the user's hard disk. When the site opens the cookie, the script would then run on the PC, allowing it to run with fewer restrictions than it would otherwise have.
  2. A vulnerability in the handling of object tags that could allow an attacker to invoke an executable already present on the user's machine. A malicious user could create an HTML web page that includes this object tag and cause a local program to run on a victim's machine.
